[독서]덜 익은 시인은 흉내만 내고, 성숙한 시인은 훔쳐온다

신경숙/창비 사건에 대해 한마디 안 할 수는 없어서 :

덜 익은 시인은 흉내만 내고, 성숙한 시인은 훔쳐온다. 나쁜 시인은 가져온 것을 망치고, 훌륭한 시인은 뭔가 더 낫거나 다르게라도 만든다. 훌륭한 시인은 훔쳐온 것을 완전히 다른 특출하고 온전한 느낌으로 버무리지만, 나쁜 시인은 가져온 것을 엉성하게 끼워 넣는다. 훌륭한 시인은 보통 동떨어진 시대, 낯선 언어, 다양한 관심의 작가들로부터 빌려온다.

[제 졸역이 불편하신 분들을 위한 원문]

Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different. The good poet welds his theft into a whole of feeling which is unique, utterly different from that from which it was torn; the bad poet throws it into something which has no cohesion. A good poet will usually borrow from authors remote in time, or alien in language, or diverse in interest.

이 관점에서 봤을 때 이번 표절문은 그냥 흉내만 낸 행위로 보인다. 원작(그것도 일어에서 우리말로 번역된 번역문) 보다 낫거나, 최소한 다르지 않고, 그야말로 엉성하게 끼워 넣은 정도로 보이며, 더구나 동떨어진 시대, (원어도 아닌 국역에서 표절했으니) 낯선 언어도 아니지 않는가!

PS: 창비의 적반하장에 이은 소위 사과문이라는 것은 더 실망스럽다.
