요즈음 제가 처한 상황도 그렇지만 아마 많은 분들이 어려움, 특히나 경제적인 어려움에 계실 것입니다. 직장이 어렵거나, 직장내에 위치가 어렵거나 또는 이미 어려운 일을 당하신 분들도 계시겠죠. 오늘은 그런 분들을 위해 최소한 제 입장에서는 공감이 가는 시를 하나 올릴까 합니다.

When suddenly at the midnight hour
an invisible troupe is heard passing
with exquisite music, with shouts -
do not mourn in vain your fortune failing you now,
your works that have failed, the plans of your life
that have all turned out to be illusions.
As if long prepared for this, as if courageous,
bid her farewell, the Alexandria that is leaving.
Above all do not be fooled, do not tell yourself
it was only a dream, that your ears deceived you;
do not stoop to such vain hopes.

유명한 그리스계 시인 콘스탄틴 카바피(Constantine Cavafy)의 "신께서 안토니우스를 버리시네" (The God Forsakes Antony)는 유명한 악티움 해전 이후 알렉산드리아로 패퇴해서, 진군하는 옥타비아누스의 군대를 기다리는 안토니우스에게 전해주는 충고로 구성되어 있습니다.
이 충고는 다름 아닌 마지막 순간을 맞이함에 후회나 감상에 젖지 말고 위대한 도시 알렉산드리아를 지배 했던 그 위대한 장군의 모습으로 담담히 자신의 업적이 살아 숨쉬는 도시에 작별을 고하며 그 마지막을 즐기라는 것입니다. 이때 시인은 안토니우스에게 어떠한 말도 하지 말고 침묵을 지킬 것을 이야기 하고 있습니다. 이 침묵 덕에 안토니우스는 "절묘한 음악"을 들을 수 있고 비로서 제대로 된 작별을 알렉산드리아에 고할 수 있는 것이죠.
저는 아직은 악티움 해전의 포화속에 있지만 곧 알렉산드리아로 패퇴하게 될 운명에 처할지도 모르죠. 그때 비록 신이 버리셨다 해도 저도 안토니우스 처럼 창가에 의연히 서있기를 바라고 있습니다. (사실은 지금도 전장의 포화소리를 즐기고는 있습니다만)
물론, 저는 아직 신이 저를 버리지는 않았다고 믿습니다만...^^
